www.uva-aias.netThe major obstacle to future labour migration is its past. During recent years Europe has become afraid of migrants as disproportionate numbers are unemployed, earn low incomes, and have great difficulty integrating into the host societies.
However, Europe should perhaps overcome its aversion to migration, because in several sectors of its economy there now exists a whole range of job openings. In the near future those vacancies will attract labour migrants from within the EU, but sooner rather than later many EU member countries will need to attract migrants from outside Europe in order to bridge the gap. Europe is confronted with a great challenge regar-ding employment in the future, and labour migration is a very important aspect of this challenge.
Is there a solution to this problem? During the annual aias conference on June 14, 2007 several pros and cons of international labour migration will come to the fore such as the history of migration, the effects on wages, the demography and its impact on the welfare state. At the end of a meeting there will be a panel discussion including experts from the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (imes), Universiteit van Amsterdam, Randstad Holding nv, the EU Parliament in Brussels, the Advisory Committee on Alien Affairs (The Hague).
The AIAS Annual Conference will this year be held in cooperation with Randstad Holding nv in Diemen on 14 June 2007.
